Timothy Gilroy and Eliza Boyle's daughter Catherine

Tonight I have been doing some work on Catherine (Kate, Katie) Gilroy.

She was the Head of Household after her widowed Father, Timothy Gilroy, died. Katie Gilroy in the 1880 US Census in Newport, Newport, RI. (Source Citation: Year: 1880; Census Place: Newport, Newport, Rhode Island; Roll: 1210; Family History Film: 1255210; Page: 234D; Enumeration District: 096; .)

My Mother always referred to her as "Aunt Kate". Catherine Gilroy was born in Newport, Newport, RI, in 1858.

She married William Rafferty, and they moved to New York City.

The 1892 Providence directory shows my great-great grandfather, John George Gilroy, and William P. Rafferty residing at 106 Manton Ave, Providence, RI.

William Rafferty was listed in the 1910 US Census as a Supervisor in the Street Cleaning Department. My Great-Grandfather (his brother-in-law) and Grandfather worked for the Department of Sanitation. Daughters Elizabeth (born about 1890),  Henrietta (born abt 1892), Alice (born about 1893), and son Harry (born about 1895) are living with them in Queens, NY.

William Rafferty was listed in the 1920 US Census as a Manager in the stable at the Street Cleaning Department. Henrietta C. (born abt 1893 in Rhode Island) and Alice (born about 1894 in Rhode Island).

From the New York Census in 1925 does not show William Rafferty with the family, and the US Census in 1930 lists her as a widow.

She died 1939.

I knew that her daughter married Andrew Veeck from an obituary for another family member, but I was not sure of the daughter's first name. I traced through the US and New York Censuses, and thought her name was Elizabeth. However, when I found her son's (Andrew R. Veeck) death record entry on FamilySearch, https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGGK-8CJ, his parents were listed as Andrew R. Veeck and  Elizabeth Rafferty. Although he died at 201 Ransom St. Apt. # 1-B in
Fuquay-Varina, Wake, North Carolina, he is buried in Greenfield Cemetery in Hempstead, New York.

So I will be looking for some birth records of Katie Gilroy's children in Rhode Island.

And looking for death records of the Veeck's in New York City, and burials in Hempstead at Findagrave.

Annie T. (Gilroy) Crane

Today I gathered data to send for some records from the Rhode Island Archives. I started by searching for Elizabeth Gilroy Weaver's death record. Then, I searched for information about her sister, Annie T. Gilroy, who married Maurice Crane.

This is part of an effort to check Timothy Gilroy and Eliza Boyle children's records for information about the parents' place of origin in Ireland. In most records the parents list their birthplace as "Ireland".

I searched http://familysearch.org, specifically searching for records in the Rhode Island, Deaths and Burials, 1802-1950, database containing the name of Annie's husband, Maurice Crane, of Newport, Newport, RI. (https://familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=https://familysearch.org/records/collection/1675536).

While there, I learned a sad story.

She lost a child only identified as Male on 18 Nov 1886 (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F8XY-P7Rm)
:
She lost another child only identified as Female on 09 Sep 1893
(https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F8XV-7SM)

and she herself died at age 36 on 14 Sep 1893 (5 days after her female child)

Annie and Maurice's 14-year-old son, Maurice V. J. Crane, died on 18 Oct 1905 (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F8XD-C92)

In 1892, there was another record for Morris Crane, as the father of Theresa Crane who died on 26 Nov 1892 (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F8XQ-GV4)
Which suggested that he had remarried. This was verified in his obituary found in Newport newspapers.

Annie's husband, Maurice Edward Crane died on 19 Apr 1910 (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F8XX-MM6)
They had one son survive, Charles Crane. Maurice would be survived by his second wife and a son from that marriage, as well as Charlie.

Welcome to the Gilroy Family Research Blog

This blog is intended to document what I find out about Timothy Gilroy's roots and descendants.

Timothy Gilroy came to the US in 1851, settled in Newport, RI, and married Eliza Boyle in 1855 at St. Mary's in Newport. In an effort to learn more about this couple, their ancestors, and their descendants, this blog will also be about the associated families with them. I will also include some surname study data about Gilroys living in Rhode Island between 1850 and 1900.

My goal is to claim to be the greatest living expert about Gilroys in Rhode Island between 1850 and 1900. My desire is that someone comes along with all the data I am missing to prove I am not!
