  1. Hi! Timothy Gilroy was my 3rd Great Grandfather! John George was my 2nd Great Grandfather, and John Henry was my Great Grandfather, his son was John Henry also who was my Grandfather! I am so excited to have stumbled across your page! I have seen this picture several times on Ancestry.com but I was wondering if it might belong to a different Gilroy? He seems to be in uniform, perhaps a Firemen's uniform? I know there was a John Gilroy (not related) who was in fact a fireman. I really hope it is in fact Timothy, please if you know differently, let me know. -Robin Del Toro

  2. Hello Robin!

If you look in the census, you will see that John George Gilroy was a street cleaner, and that was the precursor of the NYC Sanitation Department. (My Grandfather also was.) So, I believe the uniform is from the early Sanitation Department.

Thanks for your post, cousin! (I sent you a message on Ancestry.com and look forward to exchanging information about our Gilroys.)
